Dental Implant and Causes behind its Failure

While opting for surgical procedure, various internal and external factors cause complications or even total failure of treatment. Dental implants are designed to be permanent replacement of missing tooth and popular alternative to fixed bridges or removable dentures. Dental implants anchor artificial teeth directly into the jawbone, which makes artificial teeth more functional and aesthetically pleasing. However, it is also said that the implant procedure is comparatively expensive and takes longer time to recover. Go through further sections below to know success rates and problems that cause failure of such procedures.

  • Success rates:
More than 95% of the implants go successful. Most problems that occur are minor and get easily resolved. After availing the treatment, if you found anything wrong, consult with your surgeon or orthodontists as soon as possible. Fast response to your dental problems may reduce the risk or chances of failure up to a great extent.  For making your dental implants successful, it is required to find an experienced dentist, proper planning of treatment and scheduling beforehand to take post-surgery care.
  • Failure of Osseointegration:
Osseointegration is responsible for structural and functional connection between artificial implant and gum bone. Failure of an implant is caused by inability of jawbone to get fused together with the implant.
  • Implant infection:
Peri-implantitis or infection can take place, when the bacteria are present during the oral surgery or after the surgery. When dental cementation skips covering the area under the crown, germs affect it. Smoking, consuming alcohol or not maintaining oral health until following years after surgery, develops the risk of infection.
  • Implant Failure and damage of tissue and nerve:
Damage of tissues around the implant supported area causes failure of implant. When the implant is too close to the nerve, patients may experience chronic pain. Due to temporary or permanent damage of nerves, patients need to remove the implant.
  • Overloading:
In certain cases, the oral surgeon may find it suitable to put immediate load of other components during implant procedure. It is called one-stage dental care procedure. In this phase, dental crowns are placed over the implants right after the surgery. The method is applied to take post-surgical care followed by the quick recovery. Sometimes, overloading may cause problems due to the forces placed on the crown and can disrupt the osseointegration process. Even, such one-stage procedure increases dental implant cost.
  • Sinus problem:
Sinuses can be major challenge for dental implants that are replacing the teeth upper row. Presence of sinuses makes dental implant procedure in upper back jaw difficult. Therefore, dentists may perform sinus augmentation that lifts the existing bone into sinus cavity to create enough space for bone grafting. It makes the ground strong enough to support dental implant.

In case, you experience implant failure, it must be removed and the area should be left for healing. You may require bone grafting to achieve better foundation for implant that improves the chance of success. If you have attempted for implant more than once and facing failure yet, ask your dentist whether he/she is capable of to complete dental implant procedure or not.
